Exuberant yet precise, new clashing ideologies get the revered Cartier touch in their latest addition to the Clash [Un]limited collection
When Clash de Cartier debuted in the Maison last 2019, it defied all expectations of what Cartier jewelry should look like. No other name aptly captured the characteristic of the collection other than “Clash”—charming in its appeal yet aggressive in design, bold in details yet subtle when observed, sharp in appearance yet soft to the touch, and ultimately blurring the line between masculine and feminine. It acknowledges a couple of the Maison’s codes, namely a love for geometry and volume, as well as accents like beads and studs.
This was followed by the mesmerizing Clash [Un]limited jewelry line in 2021, carrying the same sense of movement and contrasts which made Clash de Cartier a favorite. Now, the Cartier Clash [Un]limited watch serves as the newest entry in the collection, still carrying this rebellious craftsmanship while adding a new function.
New ways to Clash
Actually, references seen in the Clash [Un]limited date all the way back to the 1930s through the influence of the Maison’s then artistic director of fine jewelry Jeanne Toussaint. Contrasts in the preciousness and industrial aesthetic of ball bearings are seen in the beads that roll over each other to the hinges of the bracelet, all articulated to create softness on the skin. Similarly, contrasting geometric motifs are emphasized not only through the inclusion of round and square elements, but also through alternating brushed and satin-finish gold. Finally, a clash of colors are also at play, combining yellow or rose gold with violet gold, a new shade of gold in tones of shimmering violet, entirely developed for Cartier. It punctuates the watch, from the clou carré to the beads on the bracelet.
