The Best Men’s Jewelry At The Met Gala

In a homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s personal style, the A-lister men were on theme at the MET Gala’s celebration on Monday, May 1, 2023. Lagerfeld loved diamond brooches and fingers full of rings. While some of the celebrities that came out to kick off the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: Line of Beauty” wore these with effortless style, others like A$AP Rocky wore diamond and tsavorite cat earrings and ring in a tribute to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat. Fashion designer Zac Posen riffed on Lagerfeld collecting Suzanne Belperron pieces by wearing a vintage Belperron brooch. All the men looked dapper in their tuxedos and jewels, which would have made Lagerfeld proud.

Trevor Noah wore De Beers Enchanted Lotus Diamond Brooch set in 18K white gold.

Ke Huy Quan wore Fred Leighton 18K rose cut diamond chain, black and grey bead chain in blackened gold, antique sterling silver filigree chain, Fred Leighton contemporary and Art Deco diamond rings. He also wore a diamond brooch on his tie.

The Met Walks a Fine Line on Karl Lagerfeld: Judge the Clothes, Not the Man.

I admit: I never entirely drank the Karl Lagerfeld Kool-Aid. I was not one of those critics (and there were some) who would clutch their breast, shriek “genius!” and swoon after every show.

I often felt that for every extraordinary piece the designer created for Chanel or Fendi — by the time I started in fashion, his career at Chloé was at an end — there would be another clunker of a dress or a suit: unflattering, frumpy, kind of awkward. I found the set-building he did for his Chanel shows in the latter years (the supermarkets, rocket ships and icebergs in the Grand Palais) not just a smart social media move (which it was) but too often an egregious display of a bottomless budget and sleight of hand to distract from what was on the runway. Sure, that tweed sweatsuit made that model look like a Real Housewife — but everyone was looking at the double-C branded pasta on the faux megamart shelf instead!

Once I got spoken to by the Chanel press office for not fully “understanding” Lagerfeld’s vision. But as I wrote in the designer’s obituary (he died in 2019), while he unquestionably changed the business of the industry — its marketing, its branding, its very structure — thanks to his ability to take on a heritage house like Chanel and reinvent it with the detritus of its own codes, I didn’t think he really changed wardrobes. He didn’t give the world a new silhouette, or an expression of identity, the way Coco Chanel herself did, with the bouclé suit, or Christian Dior, with the New Look, or Saint Laurent, with Le Smoking, the tuxedo suit for women.

Lil Nas X’s Whole Body is Covered in Nothing But Jewels, Silver Paint and a Thong

On a night where the Met Gala red carpet started off far more sedate than in past years — with many guests wearing beautiful but tasteful vintage designs by the night’s honoree, the late Karl Lagerfeld — Lil Nas X turned up the outrageous factor.

Wearing not much beyond a metallic booty-baring Dior Men thong and silver body paint encrusted with pearls and crystals, the boundary-pushing recording artist looked otherworldly, finishing off his outfit in a mask that called to mind both Venice carnivals and a Choupette-esque cat, thanks to the whiskers. According to Allure, Lil Nas X worked with legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath on his look, head-to-toe, and accessorized the shiny outfit with matching platform shoes.

With Monday’s outfit, the 24-year-old rapper continues his streak of metallic, monochrome outfits at the Met Gala; in 2021, when the theme was In America: An Anthology of Fashion, Lil Nas X wore a gold suit of armor under a golden cape.

After a few rainy weekends, the forecast for New York City this weekend is Sunny and climbing in temperature. We had 90 degrees in April, which dipped down to the 40/50s and raining for four days straight and this week, we will experience lower-than-normal May temperatures. Now I know you don’t come here for me to give you a weather report, so let me get to the point—it’s a day to be out and about and looking at jewelry if you are visiting or live in or close to Manhattan.

First, let’s start with the Lagerfeld exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Exhibit. There were so many awe-inspiring looks at the Gala that gave a nod to the legendary designer in multiple ways, both personally and professionally that was fulfilling for a night of celebrity watching, but if you want to see 65 years of the visionary’s work, then head on over and get tickets for Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. It begins with his work in the 1950s and goes up to his final collection in 2019. Dubbed the Super Bowl of fashion, the Met Gala, which takes place annually on the first Monday in May, definitely earned its nickname Monday, May 1, 2023 as A-listers came to pay tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s visionary talent.

The exhibition that will open at The Costume Institute of Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” will honor Lagerfeld’s legacy and his 65 years of designing for multiple fashion houses, most notably Chanel and his own label. But the gowns and styles of the evening evoked his aesthetics for Chloe and Fendi as well. It gave the celebrities out in full force multiple themes and looks to play off, as well as Lagerfield’s personal style.

The gowns were breathtaking and the jewelry mixed all-out glamour with a tongue-in-cheek approach to pearls, camellias and iconic looks from different high points in Lagerfeld’s career. Black and white gowns provided the backdrop for many of the Chanel-inspired themes in jewels, which seemed to be the most predominant looks of the evening. But then everything from Lagerfeld’s love of cats to his sunglasses was mixed in to achieve a creative approach to celebrating his talent.
