Queen Elizabeth II is fondly remembered as being the longest-reigning British monarch, and in those 70 years, she was also known for her iconic fashion.

Britain’s longest-serving monarch would later influence the next generation of royal women, Princess Kate and Meghan Markle.

In her later years, Her Majesty had a very particular way of dressing, which most people would instantly recognise. Queen Elizabeth always wore bright dress coats of every colour of the rainbow in so that members of the public could spot her during big royal events.

In the documentary ‘The Queen at 90’, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, explained: “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say ‘I saw the Queen, Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen’s hat as she went past.”

However, Queen Elizabeth’s ability to communicate through her clothing has been a big influence on her grandaughters-in-law, Kate and Meghan, and also made her an “unmistakable fashion icon in her own time”, according to one fashion expert.

Miranda Holder, who is a celebrity stylist who has become extremely popular online for her ability to explain the details of royal fashion, has explained why Queen Elizabeth’s fashion in later Elizabeth was her “most notable and iconic.”

In an interview with the Express, Miranda said: “The latter ensembles of bright, colourful monochrome, complete with matching hat, umbrella and coordinating shoes and Launer handbag.

“She showed the rest of the firm how to embrace diplomatic dressing, wearing outfits to make others around her feel comfortable and acknowledged, and adding precious jewellery full of symbolism, setting the standard in the art of communicating through clothing.”

The Queen Consort has become progressively more stylish,  but it’s her accessories that really make a statement and, in particular, her handbag collection.

Camilla has a genuinely impressive wardrobe of exquisite totes, clutches and shoulder bags.

From sleek Launer leather clutches in muted tones, to a statement The Rodnik Band bag  (embellished to something that is more like artwork) and a lizard Moynat top handle bag, it’s the bags that elevate her look.

Working closely with her dresser Jacqui Meakin, who also dressed the Queen Mother, Camilla treads a fine line between classicand fashion forward styles, favouring timeless bags from brands such as Chanel, Fendi and Bottega Veneta. 

We have seen a number of creations by Aspinal of London, a British brand which is also seen on the arms other royal family members. Queen Elizabeth’s bag brand of choice Launer,  has become another favourite for Camilla.

Whether it’s a royal wedding, black tie gala or international tour of the Commonwealth, Queen Camilla tends to steer clear of bright colours, choosing neutrals, pastels, and navy, with the occasional pop of bright blue. 

Always looking radiant in bespoke designs by Anna Valentine, Bruce Oldfield and Fiona Clare topped with millinery by Philip Treacy, shoes by Chanel and Sole Bliss, and her Van Cleef and Arpels Alhambra blue agate bracelet, her style evolution has grown with her role.

Kate Middleton slipped on something special for the coronation.

The Princess of Wales, 41, honored Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana at the crowning ceremony through jewelry, wearing the late monarch’s George VI Festoon Necklace with the South Sea Pearl Earrings, which belonged to her mother-in-law.

The glittering George VI Festoon Necklace features three strands of diamonds and was created in 1950 at the commission of King George VI for his eldest daughter, then-Princess Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth reached for the piece for state dinners and special occasions throughout her record-breaking reign.

Princess Kate has worn her grandmother-in-law’s jewelry many times through the years, paying homage several times since the Queen’s death in September of 2022. The Sapphire chrysanthemum brooch is a simple but statement design, with multiple platinum-set sapphires surrounded by diamond petals.

It was given to the then Princess Elizabeth for launch the British Princess oil tanker in 1946, and she went on to wear it for many key moments, including her honeymoon, Princess Anne’s Christening, and her and Prince Philip’s diamond wedding anniversary.

A family heirloom, the Dorset bow brooch was Queen Mary’s wedding gift from the county of Dorset. It was then given to Elizabeth for her wedding, and she went on to wear it frequently, including for the Christening of Prince Charles.

It was often used to symbolise remembrance – the Queen wore it for many Remembrance Day events, as well as for the funeral of the Duke of Windsor.

Catherine, Princess of Wales– more commonly known as Kate Middleton — is a global fashion icon. She has an enviable wardrobe that’s worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

She’s been seen in an Alexander McQueen black and green floral gown a few times. Most notably, she wore the piece to the 2017 BAFTA Awards, and the 2019 Portrait Gala. Designed by Bruce Oldfield, Camilla’s white silk dress included embroidery with flowers such as daisy chains, forget-me-nots, celandine, and scarlet pimpernel, “representing the King and Queen Consort’s affection for nature and the British countryside,” a palace statement read, per CNN.

The front hem also featured a rose, thistle, daffodil, and shamrock to represent England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland respectively, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

Camilla wore the same Garrard diamond necklace that Queen Elizabeth II wore to her coronation in 1953.

The necklace, dubbed the Coronation Necklace, was originally gifted to Queen Victoria in 1858, according to the Royal Collection Trust. It is comprised of 25 cushion diamonds and a 22-carat diamond pendant.

Like Camilla’s gown, Kate Middleton’s coronation dress also featured symbolic embroidery.

The Princess of Wales wore a custom Alexander McQueen dress that was embroidered with the national flowers of the United Kingdom: roses for England, thistles for Scotland, shamrocks for Northern Ireland, and daffodils for Wales, the Daily Mail reported.

Bhutanese royals visit Buckingham Palace in traditional outfits

Joined by monarchs from around the world, the King and Queen of Bhutan visited Buckingham Palace in traditional outfits as they flaunted their colourful outfits. Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema attended the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, which took place at Westminster Abbey in the UK on Saturday (May 6), Bhutan Live reported.

The Bhutan royals arrived at Westminster Abbey looking stylish in their traditional purple attire. The Queen wore a traditional Kira, and the King donned a traditional Gho. According to Bhutan Live, they were joined by monarchs from around the world, including kings and queens of Spain, Denmark, Tonga, Thailand, Jordan, and more.

The Bhutanese royals, who were dressed in traditional attire, were beaming as they entered Buckingham Palace on Saturday for the pre-coronation reception. They talked with Prince William and other royals from around the world at the Palace reception, Bhutan Live reported.

The King and Queen of Bhutan attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022. The royal pair did interact with Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall, and then Prince Charles, despite never meeting the late Queen. The coronation day has marked a historical moment for the royal family as it kicks in a lot of changes in the titles and duties of royals.

According to Page Six, a US-based media company, the newly crowned Queen Camilla wore an ivory gown by Bruce Oldfield featuring silver and gold embroidery depicting the national flowers of the United Kingdom. She accessorized her outfit with the iconic Coronation Necklace, which boasts a jaw-dropping 22.48-carat pendant known as the Lahore Diamond. The Queen was crowned with the same headpiece Queen Mary used in 1911, although she added jewels from Queen Elizabeth’s collection to honour her late mother-in-law.

How King Charles III Broke With Royal Tradition and Made His Coronation Outfit His Own

King Charles III put a modern sartorial spin on his coronation look.

While much of the British monarch’s coronation on Saturday inside Westminster Abbey complied with long-held tradition and protocol, Queen Elizabeth‘s firstborn son took some liberties with his wardrobe for the occasion — and they did not go unnoticed. Notably, the 74-year-old sovereign made the look his own by ditching the standout silk stockings and breeches worn by kings of the past, including his grandfather, King George VI.

However, Charles’ predecessors still appeared to influence his overall ensemble as he entered Westminster Abbey for the ceremony, sporting a crimson coronation tunic and cream overskirt reportedly inspired by those similarly worn by George V and George VI at their own coronations, according to The Telegraph. While he also donned the Robe of State previously worn by his grandfather, Charles wore his own naval trousers, usually worn with his Royal Navy ceremonial tailcoat, The Telegraph reported. The sovereign served five years in the Royal Navy.

During the ceremony, he also chose to wear George VI’s Columbium Sindonis for his anointing and opted to rewear the late king’s sword belt and glove, per The Telegraph. The garment is a white tunic worn after being anointed, though it was hidden from view as the anointing was performed privately behind screens during Saturday’s event.

All the Hidden Details of Queen Camilla’s Coronation Outfit

The dress — which she wore to King Charles’ coronation — appeared to honor the couple’s love of nature, Queen Elizabeth II and even her dogs.

Queen Camilla’s coronation look was filled with hidden, personal details.

When the 75-year-old Queen arrived at Westminster Abbey on May 6 for King Charles’ big day, she did so in an outfit which included a crimson velvet and ermine robe and an ivory, silver and gold embroidered dress.

Combining tradition and modern touches, Camilla wore the Robe of State originally made for Queen Elizabeth II’s own coronation back in 1953, with alterations from London’s oldest tailors, Ede and Ravenscroft.

Her Peau de Soie silk dress made by Bruce Oldfield was simple in design; the garment features Oldfield’s signature paneling, a short chain and intricate embroidery that included “daisy chains, forget-me-nots, celandine and scarlet pimpernel, representing the King and Queen Consorts affection for nature and the British countryside,” the Palace shared in a statement.

The dress also appeared to pay tribute to Camilla’s two rescue dogs, Bluebell and Beth, with two gold dogs appearing near the trim of the dress — while the names of her two children, Tom and Laura, and her grandchildren also appeared embroidered into the look.

While leaving the ceremony, Camilla wore a Robe of Estate, which was also designed by Ede and Ravenscroft. Hand embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework, the cape featured 24 plants sewed in gold thread. Among them was lily of the valley, which was a flower in her Royal Highness’ wedding bouquet and a known favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
